Hello? And Happy Birthday!

Get it?

Wow - if I had a nickel for every time I took a second to realize how quickly time is flying by, I would be a very wealthy Chicken Wing!  I've recently discovered that Christmas has decided not to wait for me to be ready, and I really need to put the other million things going on in my life aside and devote some attention to getting ready for the holidays!

I greatly apologize for the lack of posting here lately - I'm still working on this whole promotion at work/planning a wedding/couponing/being addicted to the facebook online yard sale balancing act, and to be very candid, I'm not doing very well at it!  I mean, I'm being successful at most of these things, but it's definitely hard to keep my blogging up to date with all of that going on!

Oh, you thought that was it?  NO SIR/NO MA'AM!  There's more, but that will have to wait for a future post because truthfully, that deserves a post all its own!

Today's post needs to center around one of the greatest guys I've ever known.  I haven't seen him in a long time - almost seventeen years, to be exact - but today is his birthday, and he deserves my undivided attention.

I have really big feet and ears for a little Wing, but my Daddy sure looks handsome!

This guy...is my Daddy.  December 5th usually involves many emotions for me, but I'm finding that this year, I have had a little bit of an easier time because I literally have been so darn busy, I basically turn into a vegetable in my spare time.  It doesn't leave a whole lot of room for grief.

When I prayed him a Happy Birthday today, I told him that I hoped he was getting in lots of golfing, hunting, fishing, and that he was getting to watch a lot of the Redskins and Tar Heels games.

I told him that I hoped he had the basket of rolled-up socks next to his recliner in heaven so he could chunk socks at the TV every time the Redskins made him mad (which unfortunately, has probably been happening a lot).  I told him that I hoped he was still singing ever-so-off-key but as loudly and proudly as he ever did.  (I used to love listening to him forget the words and instantly improve most songs by inserting his own noises or lyrics).

I told him how much I loved him and missed him and how I still think of him every.single.day.  I told him not to be mad at me because I've been getting so emotional every time I tell someone how sad I'm going to be at my wedding since he won't be there to meet Comanche, ease my nerves, walk me down the aisle, or share our special father-daughter dance.

I told him to keep watching out for our family and to keep an eye on Little Sister Chicken Wing and Little Brother Chicken Wing.  I told him to take care of some wonderful people I know that have lost their lives recently.  I told him to show them the ropes and teach them how things go in heaven.  I told him to hug my PaPa and cousins and friends for me and to remind them how much I love and miss them, too.

Finally, I told him, "Thank You."  I thanked him for teaching me things to do, things not to do, and for showing up now and then to remind me he's still watching.  I thanked him for instilling in me the importance of going to church and working on my relationship with God (even though I was quite lost in that department for a very long time).  I thanked him for marrying my mom and giving me my siblings, and for letting me keep one of the puppies that would eventually become one of my very favorite dogs.  I thanked him for just being him.

So here's to you, Daddy.  I will always be your little girl.  I will always remember you as one of the best guys I ever met.  I will never forget the legacies you left behind and I will never stop aspiring to take your best qualities and make them my own.  I miss you.  I love you.

Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Pray For These Tragedy Victims

I went back and forth over whether to show this video or not, but I wanted to give you a visual if you've not yet seen it in order to further the tenacity of your prayers for the victims and families of the victims of this horrific accident! {WARNING: THIS VIDEO IS VERY HARD TO WATCH.}

I'm not sure if you've heard of this yet, but tragedy struck the Sugarland concert at the Indiana State Fair this weekend when 60mph winds took down the stage, killing at least four people and injuring at least forty others.  I ask you to put these people on your prayer lists and to lift them up.

Source

Heavenly Father, please hold each and every person affected by this horrific accident in Your hands and lift them up during this very difficult time.  In Your Name, I pray.  Amen.

Always Say A Prayer

Today's post is a very serious one, and it's written by an exhausted mind.  I experienced something last night that I never thought I would, and it's left me with many tired thoughts in my head that I wanted to put out to the world.

In a nutshell, one of my neighbors apparently got to a point where he felt he could no longer go on, and he took his own life in my backyard last night.  From the noise that I heard (I thought someone had broken my flower pot on my patio), to the phone call I received asking if anything was going on, to scanning the parking lot, and eventually discovering his lifeless body behind our townhouse building while trying to console his significant other, it's all a bit of a blur.

There were police officers rushing, and blue lights flashing.  There were people standing in the doorways of the twenty-five units of our little community.  There were questions, and note taking, and flashlights, and crime scene tape.

And there were the poor people who had to deal with the mess that this situation had left them in - someone they loved was gone.  Someone they loved was lying in the grass being documented by the authorities.  If it hadn't been for the fact that you could easily see the contents of his head, you would think he'd simply fainted.

All in all, it was a horrific sight, and it leaves me feeling so saddened that this young man had reached a point in his short life where he felt he could not continue living.  I never knew his name, but he was always very friendly and kind to me.  We had to alternate the times that we took our dogs outside - his pit bull, while still a puppy, would certainly be able to eat my tiny babies alive, and with all of the animals outside at the same time, none of them could concentrate on the task at hand.

The entire ordeal lasted four hours, and I just keep going back to the fact that from the outside looking in, he seemed fine.  I'd seen him less than two hours before his death, and he seemed fine then too.  I'll probably never know what led him to this, but I can say this - I pray for him.  I pray for his family.  I pray for our little community - for the parents who had to explain to their children why there were so many officers in our neighborhood.  For the extended family and friends of this man, who will most likely have a very hard time coming to grips with the fact that they'll never see him again.

I also have used this time to reflect on the fact that this was another reminder of just how quickly life can be over, and it's important to do what you can to make this world a better place when you're living in it.  Part of me wishes I had gotten to know him - maybe I could have reached out and things could have been different.  The other part of me knows that it possibly wouldn't have been enough, and I'm satisfied with the fact that I could be there for the poor woman who is left alone in that house today.

If there's anything that has been renewed for me through this situation, it's that I have to rely on God when times get hard.  I know that I am not strong enough to handle the weight of the world on my own, and that He is always there for me.  He's protective of me, and He loves me, and He would never have given me life if He hadn't wanted me to be. Sometimes, being the control freak that I am, I have a hard time giving control over to anyone - even God - and that's silly because He ultimately has control of everything.  But, this has reminded me that sometimes, it's best to get on your face with God and ask Him for help.

I even thought back to one of the emails I received - you know the kind.  Sometimes, they are so annoying and usually, they bring the threat of bad things happening to you if you don't send them on.  This one, however, had a poem that made a lot of sense to me, and I thought of it again in light of the events of last night.

There's work to do, deadlines to meet.
You have no time to spare.
But as you hurry and scurry...
ASAP - Always Say A Prayer.

In the midst of family chaos,
Quality time is rare.
Do your best; let God do the rest.
ASAP - Always Say A Prayer.

It may seem like your worries
Are more than you can bear.
Slow down and take a breather...
ASAP - Always Say A Prayer.

God knows how stressful life can be,
And He wants to ease your cares.
He'll respond to all your needs...
ASAP - Always Say A Prayer.

Today I'm saying a little prayer
That God will send a smile to you
And send you special blessings
Through everything you do.
- Lisa Englehardt

I wish this young man could have been able to see past his pain and remember to Always Say A Prayer.  Since he was not able to do so, I ask each and every one of you to lift his family up today - lift them up tomorrow, and the rest of this week. Lift them up as long as you can remember to do so.  Lord knows they probably need that comfort and peace right now.

And if you are in need yourself - if suicide has ever crossed your mind - please do not keep this to yourself.  Talk to someone.  Let them tell you how special and loved you are.  Let someone help you.  Life is so precious, and the world will not be the same without you in it.  Always Say A Prayer.

Reverb 10 - Prompt #3

December 3 – Moment. Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, colors). (Author: Ali Edwards)

There were many moments that I really felt alive in 2010, but one that sticks out most just happened recently.  One moment during which I felt most alive this year was Thanksgiving Day.

Grandma Chicken Wing's house was warm, which perfectly offset the chilly, gray day that happened to be drizzling rain for the majority of the time.  There was a table full of food to perfectly complement the table full of family.  While I was so thankful for the bounty my Grandma had prepared for us year after year, I was also mindful of a few things that were new to the experience.

1.  The seating arrangement was different.  This was our first Thanksgiving without Papa Chicken Wing, and he always sat at one head of the table.  Grandma Chicken Wing always sat at the other head of the table.  This year, Uncle Chicken Wing sat at the head where Papa was usually seated.

2.  This year, I had full control of the amount of food I consumed.  While I won't lie and say I didn't go overboard on my own, this year Papa wasn't there asking me repeatedly if I wanted more creamed potatoes.  (His Alzheimer's had gotten pretty bad in recent times before he passed away, and he loved to help out during lunches and dinners by making sure I wasn't lacking in the potato department.  I made my stomach hurt so badly one time because I just didn't have the heart to tell him that I was full).

3.  As we all encounter sure signs of the circles of life, so did I this Thanksgiving.  It was the first that Comanche (my very handsome boyfriend, if you're a new reader) shared with our family.  Papa was gone, which saddened me terribly, and Comanche was there, which made me giddy with excitement.  It was also the first time that Comanche met Grandma and Uncle Chicken Wing, so I was filled with anticipation for that.

4.  Also new this year?  Grandma Chicken Wing actually let me prepare something for the Thanksgiving table - my homemade macaroni and cheese.  For those who don't know my Grandma, this is like finding a cure for something horrible, or discovering a new type of dinosaur - it truly is ground-breaking!  Grandma is famous for never letting anyone help or contribute - after all, it's her day to shine, as the matriarch of our family.  This was a huge deal for me, and I am happy to report that everyone loved my mac and cheese, including Grandma!

The Spread!  A picture's worth a thousand words!

Little Brother Chicken Wing enjoying scrumptious mac & cheese that someone made!  ;)

Oh you know there was more waiting on the stove!  We need a bigger table!
Not everything was different, however.  There were certain things that scream classic Thanksgiving to me, and those still were present in 2010.  The food was absolutely amazing, parades and football games were watched, and a game of toss-around football was played.  Dinner was had with the leftovers from Thanksgiving lunch, just as it is almost every year.  Games were played (this year, it was a colorful and competitive family favorite - Mexican dominoes).

I always feel so alive at Thanksgiving because it's one of many yearly reminders of how lucky I am.  I hope I am alive to experience many more Thanksgivings with my family, as it's one of my favorite holidays!

Good Music Alert!

As always, when I find goodness, I would much rather pass it along than keep it to myself.  Consider this another of my random acts of selflessness!  A friend of mine made me privvy to a music group that I think is fantastic!  They're called The Band Perry and the members are Kimberly, Neil, and Reed Perry, and they're siblings.  I happen to think that's awesome!

I wanted to share some of their songs with you, and I think you'll enjoy the slightly country, slightly indie inflections they bring to the table.  The songs are precious, and are pretty much guaranteed to get your attention.  So, let's not delay this any further - here we go!

First up, If I Die Young.

Next, All Your Life.

Third in the batter's box is a catchy diddy, Hip To My Heart.

Finally, here's Postcard from Paris.

I hope you like what you've heard so far.  The Band Perry's debut album drops October 12, which is right around the corner!  I think I'll be purchasing a copy and if you like them, I hope you do the same!  Also, be sure to check out their website to learn more about these up-and-coming superstars!

Music and Lyrics

I know more than a handful of people who can relate to this song and thought they might need a pick-me-up of the musical variety! And of course, since you know yours truly looks out for you, I've even found the video that has lyrics so you can learn to sing along and then happily jam out wherever you feel the need to! :)

So check out this video of "Impossible" by Shontelle. It's a great song, with great lyrics, and the lady has a cute voice, too!

I will be back to posting regularly soon. I had to get my personal internet back up and running after some changes in my life, and I need to update you all on the 2010 Chicken Wing Family Vacation, which just commenced on Saturday! We had a great time, and I can't wait to share some new experiences with you that we'd never done before! Stay tuned, Peeps!

From Time To Eternity

Peeps, I come to you today with a favor in my pocket. There is something that the Chicken Wing Family needs from you on this hot Tuesday in June. All I ask is this, please:

Early this morning, after a fairly long and difficult struggle with Alzheimer's and lung cancer, my darling Papa Chicken Wing went to be with the Lord in Heaven. While my heart is aching, my mind is cursing the month of June, and my eyes are crying, my soul is rejoicing because Papa's suffering is finally over.

It is going to take some time to figure out how our family works without him, and that is painful, but I am so happy for him in that he is in the best place of all! He spent his whole life giving to others and helping others. He worked at the local funeral home for more than 25 years - he worked there for my whole life so far! Every day, he helped people in their darkest hours as they laid to rest those that they loved so much. He has been a quiet and gentle beacon of our small community for a long time - I loved seeing him run into people because they would always light up when they saw him.

It's ironic that his colleagues will now have to assist us in his final departure, but it was bound to happen. You know what they say about life - nobody makes it out alive. I have no regrets, as I was able to spend quite a while last night with him. I was there helping Grandma out from about 6:30pm - 12:30am, and it felt a little like he waited for me. Maybe that's not true, but it's what will help me through this. While I wasn't there as he actually passed on, Momma Chicken Wing said that he went very peacefully, and while we are heartbroken that he is no longer with us, we are just so happy that he doesn't have to labor anymore.

It had gotten quite difficult for him, and it was hard to adjust to seeing him in such a fragile state. Don't get me wrong - Papa was never a large man; quite the opposite, actually. But recently, he became frail. It was hard to see him get so frustrated because he just couldn't do the things he was used to doing. I think the most important thing is that he knows he was loved, loved, loved. All he wanted was to be at home and to have his pain managed, and I think we accomplished both of those things. It was such a gift to us to be able to grant him his last wishes. I hope his journey to eternal life was an easy one, and that he felt as peaceful as he seemed to be.

This is a part of life that I haven't had to do yet. I've been so blessed to be able to have all four of my grandparents for all my life. I did things a little backwards, as I've gone through losing my daddy, which was one of the hardest things in the world and one of the defining factors in who I am today. Papa was one of the ones who were left to help take care of us after that, and I am grateful for all he did for me.

He was kind, gentle, and easy-going. Growing up, my little legs could always keep up with him because he took slow strides. I will never forget the ONE time he raised his voice at my siblings and me - we were being bad, and Grandma had repeatedly fussed at us, and then all of a sudden Papa said in his "meanest, most serious" voice, "Y'all better stop it or I'm going to get involved!" Seriously, that's as "mean" as he ever got. And you know what? All three of us cried because we had upset him. Grandma would pick at him, because that's the relationship they had for more than 50 years. He would never raise his voice back, but he would wait until she went down the hallway and then make a face or a smart remark behind her back. It would always make us laugh. That's just the way he was, and I will always remember and love him for that.

So please pray for us, and for him, and lift us up in this time of need. Your support will be felt, I promise, and it will be oh so appreciated. The power of prayer is so strong, and so far-reaching. Thank you for everything - you guys are the best!

One Year Later...

Source

It was one year ago today that the world lost one of the greatest entertainers of all time. As my personal favorite artist, Michael Jackson has filled my life with music, dancing, singing, and pure joy. There will never be an entertainer who will possess the same magic as this man.

Michael, you will be forever missed. May you always rest in eternal peace.

The Only Thing That's Constant Is Change, Part II

For Part I, go here.

Well, Peeps - this is it. This post is the follow-up to the post I wrote here. I would have to again reiterate just how blessed I feel to call each and every reader of this blog a friend, even if we've never met before. The love and support that I've received in recent times is more than I deserve, and when I count my blessings, each of you are on my list.

Without further delay, here we go. There are three things in life I know for sure.

{One - I am one of the most blessed individuals on the planet.}

No matter what negativity takes place in my life, I know that there are people who would kill to take a stroll in my peep-toe shoes, and I do not take that for granted. I have been blessed as can be in regards to occupation, and I spend my days being fulfilled knowing that I helped someone in some way. I am drowning in love from my friends and family, and the submersion feels amazing. It's astounding to me how one little comment on facebook or my blog, in my email inbox or as a text/voice mail on my phone can lift my spirits so much that I feel like I can do anything I want to do. That is something I will never forget for the rest of my life.

{Two - The only thing that's constant is change.}

You might have read in my post here that I was very excited about a lot of things that were going on that weekend. One of the things I was excited about was that Mr. Chicken Wing was coming back to town for a visit.

I knew that we had events to go to and friends to see. I knew that the distance had been hard on our relationship. I knew that he had a hard time focusing when he was surrounded by lots of other things. I didn't know just how different things would become in an instant.

I will not go into details because they are personal. The bottom line is this: Mr. Chicken Wing and I are no longer together. We had some intense discussions regarding our six-year union, and at the end of the day decided we each needed more than what was presently there; he needed more time and energy to devote to getting himself and his life to where he wanted to be, and I needed someone who wants the same things out of life that I do. Nothing more, nothing less.

While initially, I was very upset because I had no time to prepare for the discussion, after a lot of retrospective thought and prayer, I realized that this move was in the best interest of each of us. I feel extensive relief in regards to the fact that I finally have a resolution, and I feel proud that I have been intelligent enough not to lose myself in a relationship. I wasn't left with nothing when this relationship ended. I was left with everything except a boyfriend, and that's not a bad place to be.

Contrary to popular assumption before speaking with me, I am not at all bitter, angry, or jilted. I have absolutely no regrets, because my relationship with him was a vehicle that transported me from a simple college student to the woman I am today. I learned invaluable lessons about relationships and about myself. I am left with a lot of fun memories, and a ton of hope for the future - my outlook on life is sunny. I also hope that each of us gets what we want out of life - that would be the ultimate win!

So, while life has presented a path that I hadn't really given much consideration to, I am currently walking down the new path as confident as ever. I am on the journey to who I want to be and what I want in life, and it feels amazing! I can now use this experience to further allow me to be there for others, which is an added bonus in itself. So, bottom line: This girl is going to be okay! I just wanted to take the time to share this life change with my Peeps, because this blog is an honest account of my life, thoughts, and experiences, and as I said before...the only thing that's constant is change.

{Three - Change is not necessarily a bad thing.}

Every day I learn more and more that change should not be feared, but embraced. It will always be there, and sometimes happens when you least expect it. While sometimes change is bad (you lose a loved one, your job, you have to move or put your life back together), I believe that everything is okay in the end. If it's not okay now, then it's not the end. Change teaches us adaptability, and that is a survival skill necessary to practice. I used to fear change, but I am learning to accept that things change, and people change, and situations change - there are only so many things I can control, and that's okay. I have enough on my plate. I'm perfectly content letting God handle the rest. :)

These three things I know for sure, and I am so glad I could share them with you.

Until next time,
Miss Chicken Wing

Remember to Breathe...

Sometimes, I get so overwhelmed that I just don't know what to do. You know the feeling I'm talking about. I relate it to my cell phone. When the cell phone has been used consistently and has given absolutely everything it's got, it gets to a point where the only option is to just shut down.

Lately, I've felt like I was at that point - I was going to shut down. I needed to shut down.
I recently created a post entitled Holy Hiatus, Batman! In it, I was apologizing to my faithful Peeps for the lack of blog contribution lately, and I was talking about just how busy the month of April is in the Chicken Wing household. I thought that was insanity. I thought wrong.

Insanity came when I thought that I had enough to "deal with" in the month of April. I don't mean that in a bad way - honest to goodness, I don't. It's just tough to find that point of mental balance. Work has been more than crazy for the past month. I've been busy pretty much every single weekend. I'd fallen way behind on my housework, to the point that I was overwhelmed just thinking of all that still needed to get done. I had the incandescent joy of celebrating my anniversary with Mr. Chicken Wing, and birthdays of people we love most in the world. I received my annual reminder that I haven't seen my daddy in 15 years on the anniversary of his death. Then, while at Sam's Club and barely dragging by while getting much-needed toilet paper and half-and-half in bulk, I got the phone call - the call I first got when I was 10 years old, and life had changed as I knew it.

It was Wednesday, April 28th around 6:30pm. It was someone I hadn't talked to in ages - so long, in fact, that I didn't have her number. From the tone of her voice, I immediately knew this was one of those calls...I knew something was wrong.
Something was wrong. My college friend, one of Mr. Chicken Wing's fraternity brothers, had passed away. I felt the rug get pulled out from under me, and to be perfectly honest with you, I can't remember the rest of my Sam's Club trip. I can't remember the drive home. All I know is that I made it home, and I did manage to purchase everything that I needed at the store. Beyond that, all I knew was that I was numb and confused. He was 30 years old and one of the most healthy guys I'd ever known. He was famous for making everyone laugh. He had a really good job that he was proud of. He was a good man. He had just gotten married in October 2009. He was too young for this.

The next few days were full of phone calls and dead cell phone batteries. There was crying. There was listening. There was consoling. There were hugs, and well wishes. There was planning, and rearranging schedules. I had a very important meeting the morning after I received this news. My brain was pulled down two separate paths simultaneously: The first path led to focus - I had to keep it together. This was my meeting. The second path led to sadness and disbelief. How could I act as though nothing was wrong? He was my friend. To put it mildly, it was chaos. I had a bad day at work on Friday, and it was just way too much for one day...complete sensory overload.

I worked six days last week, and then drove north for the funeral with two of my best friends. We reminisced about Del, and the good times we had. We talked about our regret for having not seen him in such a long time. We pondered these things in silence at some points, too. I also had to formulate my plan of attack in regards to supporting Mr. Chicken Wing. This was very hard for him, because he knew Del longer than me, of course. It was also so hard because this was his first time losing a peer. Unfortunately, I've had quite a bit more experience in this area, so I knew how I would handle it. I didn't know what Mr. Chicken Wing would feel, or how he would react. I just knew I wanted to be there for him. I also knew I wanted to give him a huge hug.

The services were nice, and it was so good to see so many friends that I had been missing so much. Most of them, I had missed even more than I realized. The only thing missing was Del. Usually, when we all hung out, he was there, too. I think we all had to come to terms with the fact that it could never be that way again - it could never be like it was in the good ole days. I saw a friend of ours named Kyle, and that was especially difficult for me. You see, I have never known Kyle without Del. I met them together, and when they came back to visit the rest of us at college, they always came together. While they were equally fabulous individuals, they had always been a package deal in my eyes, and seeing Kyle without Del just felt so wrong. It broke my heart. It caused me to break down.

It also sent a wave of revitalization through the masses of our college friends. The days following were filled with messages of hope and of determination to live life to the fullest. We had to do that. We needed to do that in Del's honor. That's how he lived his life, and that's how we wanted to live, too. We were all determined not to let life get in the way of communicating with one another. Del brought us together in life. He brought us together in his death, too.

So, while I know none of us will ever be over this, sometimes it takes something like this to make you take a step back and appreciate all you have in your life. It makes you notice the smell of freshly cut grass or the sight of a perfect sunset. It makes you hold on to those closest to you just a little bit tighter. It reminds you that you have something else to look forward to once we all get to heaven if we do. That's when we'll have the biggest family reunion of all.

The friend I received "the call" from, Del, and Miss Chicken Wing

The fraternity brothers at two of my best friends' wedding...the bride, groom, and I rode up to the funeral services together. Can you spot Mr. Chicken Wing?

So, I once again want to apologize for the super light posting recently. I try not to let myself get so overwhelmed that the cell phone (aka Miss Chicken Wing) has to shut down. I plan to start picking myself back up here in the coming days. I know that when I finally catch up on my sleep that things will be better.

For now, my only constant thought is just, "remember to breathe."

Until next time,
Miss Chicken Wing

The Saddest I've Been In a While....

Rest in peace, Michael.

I really hope you were able to leave this world with even the tiniest realization of your incredible impact on it. I hope you felt no pain. You will be so missed.

I don't really have any other words at this time. Maybe I'll find some later.

Until next time,
A deeply-saddened Chicken Wing
