Songs To Get You Going

I had a lot of positive response to my "Songs of Sunday" post so I thought I'd do a follow-up post with even more musical goodness for my Peeps.  You know, because I really love you and all and I want you to have the encouragement you need to make it a good week!

Some of these are songs we sing at my amazing church and others are ones I've heard on Spirit FM. (Sidenote:  I really never imagined that I'd end up liking this station as much as I do, but when your normal stations are playing the ever-loving-poo out of songs you used to like same songs over and over again, it's a really refreshing break).

I'm proud to post this next group because they got their start at a local university and they are pretty incredible - the way they harmonize with one another and have matched their vocals up until they're pitch-perfect is ridiculous!  Here are Anthem Lights with "Can't Get Over You."

I hope you find some inspiration in these messages - I think they're beautiful and uplifting and that's what I love about Sundays....I get the good stuff that I need to cope with any week that's thrown at me!  Naturally, I wouldn't want anything less for my Peeps!

10 Relationship Do's

Let me start by saying that it was really hard for me to just choose ten things, but I'm winging it.  Get it?  Because I'm the Chicken Wing.  Har-dee-har-har.  Let's get to it!

10 Relationship Do's:

1. Respect your partner.

Respect takes a lifetime to gain and a second to lose. It's important that you think about what's great in your partner - what makes you proud of him/her? What makes you proud that he/she picked you?

2. Be someone your partner can respect.

If you want to be treated like a child, act like a child. If you want your partner to be proud to be with you, be a living example of that type of person. Act like a lady or a gentleman. Be kind to other people. Take the high road when others upset you. Be the type of person that others can look up to.

3. Be honest.

Even "truth hurts" brutal honesty is better than no honesty at all. There are few things that hurt worse than a lie or omission, and you should be able to trust your partner to be able to handle the truth. The truth always comes out one way or another, so you want to be on the right side of that truth.

4. Be faithful.

Cheating is a touchy subject. Clearly there are trust issues and respect issues where cheating is involved. I've been in situations times before where I could genuinely understand why people cheat. (Reference the 80/20 rule clip in the last post). The bottom line is this - cheating is taking the easy way out. If you don't communicate that something is missing and that you're having a hard time with temptation, your partner never has a chance to fix the problems. You're beating yourself before you even begin.

5. Make fun a priority.

Let's be honest - life is hard. It's hard to be light and cheery all the time when gas prices are about to hit $4.00 per gallon and everyone is suffering financially and the kids/pets are driving you crazy and you're always pulled in a million directions. It can be overwhelming, that's for sure. It is your responsibility, though, to stop the world for a minute and schedule some fun time for you and your partner. Reconnect, laugh, and be silly. If you don't, you're going under. Or you're destined to be miserable for the rest of your life, and that sounds about as fun as swimming in the ocean in a steak bikini.

6. Communicate often and thoroughly.

Communication has always been pretty easy for me - heck, I'm a talker to beat all talkers who was born to a talker who beats all talkers. Sometimes, though, communication is hard. Sometimes, there are things that need to be said that you don't want to say. Say them. Nothing can help your partner get a better insight into who you are and how you think than you telling them. Take the guesswork out. If you want something, say you want something. If you are unhappy with how a situation was handled, talk it out. If you are not having fun at the moment and you feel like you need to have fun, say so. I hate to be the bearer of devastating news, but men and women don't think the same. They also don't communicate the same. The sooner you realize that, the better it will be for everyone involved.  Oh, and don't forget that listening is one-half of communicating.

7. Be open-minded.

There have been several times in my relationship where I've been introduced to new things.  Comanche has multiple interests that are the same as mine.  He also has multiple interests that I either a) knew absolutely nothing about or b) thought I wasn't cut out for (read: had no interest in at all).  I've learned through my relationship with him that by being open-minded to new experiences and ideas, I've become so much more well-rounded!  I now like new foods that I'd never tried before, and I've attempted to do things I never really wanted to do before.  Take camping - I always said it wasn't for me.  Comanche asked nicely (and purchased all of the things we'd need, therefore making it impossible for me to say no), and I loved it!  I now want to camp at least once every year!

8.  Compromise.

Wow, this is so important.  I actually don't like the word compromise as much (because so many people use it with a negative undertone), so Comanche and I take a different approach.  We call it "The Game Plan."  We lay out our options on the table and then pick and choose what we think will be best and we listen to one another's sides.  From there, we make our game plan, and the trick to this is to stick to the game plan.  For example, if we have an event that one of us really wants to go to, and the other has to be up to work early the next morning, we devise a plan that will satisfy both of us, and then we stick to the plan - no exceptions.  That makes it a win-win for everyone, we decided in advance, and we communicated the entire time.  Talk about teamwork!

9.  Make sure your partner knows how much you love him/her.

It really does not take more than a few seconds to look your partner in the eye and say, "I love you."  It also doesn't take more than a few minutes to write a cute note, make a Valentine, construct a text message or email, or leave a voicemail.  There are so many opportunities to make your partner feel loved and appreciated.  Make him/her dinner one night.  Or, if your partner makes you dinner, clean up without discussion. Kiss them a lot.  Hug them a lot. Have a dance-off.  Watch their favorite show with them.  Plan a date night.  Go for a walk and hold hands.  Have a picnic (in the park or on the living room floor). Give him/her a massage.  Heck, buy him/her a massage.  I happen to be dating a flower ninja, myself, and that works for me!

Literally on my windshield when I walked outside yesterday morning.  Love that man!
 10.  Participate presently.

This one is huge.  What I mean by this is be present in your relationship.  Don't put things off for tomorrow - none of us are promised that, anyways.  Don't say, "I'll make time for this later."  Also, just remember one of the fundamentals - participate.  There is nothing worse than a one-sided relationship in which one person does all of the work and all of the trying.  It is so un-fulfilling and unhealthy.  Resentment and disappointment are two words that are detrimental to any relationship, so head them off by participating and pulling your own weight.  If you notice that it's been awhile since you've done something nice for your partner, step it up.

Be dependable - be there when your partner needs you. If they call, answer the phone if you can.  If you are supposed to be somewhere at a certain time, be there.  If you've told your partner that you will do something, do it.  Meet deadlines if there are any.  This feeds the trust that is necessary in all relationships.  Don't get into a rut where you're constantly being asked to do things.  If that's happening, it could be one of two things.  Either your partner is going through a needy spell, or you're severely dragging.  Either way, it needs to be addressed, and you can look back up to #6 for tips on that.  The bottom line is that ALL relationships take work, and it takes work from both parties involved.  Participating means you're doing the work, and that is more than half the battle.

*Footnote:  Again, I am not a therapist. I'm actually not qualified to give relationship advice to anyone, but I get asked relationship questions all the time and decided to provide my opinion.  Just wanted to throw that disclaimer out there!  I also don't claim to be good at all of these things.  In fact, some of these tips I learned the hard way - I was the one who wasn't living up to my potential.  Others were things I wish had been done for me in relationships.  That's why they say relationships take work and you learn something new every day.

Reverb 10 - Prompt #11

December 11 – 11 Things. What are 11 things your life doesn’t need in 2011? How will you go about eliminating them? How will getting rid of these 11 things change your life? (Author: Sam Davidson)

I think the best way to answer this prompt is in list form, so here goes nothing!

11 Things My Life Doesn't Need in 2011

1.   Drama.  While this is probably going to occur in some form anyways, that wasn't the question.

2.   Clutter.  I am going to be on a year-long constant battle in the war against clutter.  In 2011, I plan to win!

3.   Dehydration.  At the end of 2010, I am on a path to being so much better at drinking water.  I've severely cut back on the sodas and have been practicing good habits where the H2O is concerned!  2011 is going to be the year I get even better!

4.   Piles of laundry.  Gosh, do I get tired of seeing these!  I tell myself that everything will get better when I have a laundry room instead of an ill-placed laundry closet in my kitchen, but who am I kidding?  Bad habits now = bad habits later.  I'm kissing these piles goodbye in 2011!

5.   Fast food.  Convenience may be king in most rings, but I am going to err on the side of being fiscally conservative and try to boycott fast food in 2011.  My body doesn't need it.  My wallet doesn't need it.  Fast food, be gone!

6.   Folks who've been consistently hitting the Hater-ade. 2011 will find me surrounded by people that make me feel good and support me. If you want to walk in those shoes, I just don't need you in my life. I'm done pretending and it really is that simple.

7.   Staying up too late.  What the heck is my problem?  Late night = sluggish morning, and I really need to focus on re-prioritizing my evening agenda to include more sleep!  Seriously, the blogging, TV, and other "non-need" can wait!

8.   Overbooking.  I tend to sign up for everything in the world, but I need to do a better job in choosing things that mean the most to me, rather than committing to everything that's tossed my way.  I think I'll find that I get to put more of myself into the things I'm most passionate about, and that's really what it's all about.  And besides, one day I will realize that my two names are Chicken Wing...not Wonder Woman.

9.   Accepting less than I deserve.  Wow, am I pathetic in this category!  I have such a tendency to just say, "Oh, okay" instead of, "I'm worth more than that."  I've got to start being in my own corner if I want anyone else to be there!  Sheesh!

10.  Justifying everything.  I just need to stop it.  Not everything has to have a reason.  Seriously.  I know that everything happens for a reason, but I don't need to tell people about it all the time.  I annoy myself!  LOL!

11.  Worrying.  Worrying about things won't make them better, so I need to find new ways to dispell that bothersome energy.  I think I'll go with praying.  Or baking.  Or blogging.  Who knows?

Good Music Alert!

As always, when I find goodness, I would much rather pass it along than keep it to myself.  Consider this another of my random acts of selflessness!  A friend of mine made me privvy to a music group that I think is fantastic!  They're called The Band Perry and the members are Kimberly, Neil, and Reed Perry, and they're siblings.  I happen to think that's awesome!

I wanted to share some of their songs with you, and I think you'll enjoy the slightly country, slightly indie inflections they bring to the table.  The songs are precious, and are pretty much guaranteed to get your attention.  So, let's not delay this any further - here we go!

First up, If I Die Young.

Next, All Your Life.

Third in the batter's box is a catchy diddy, Hip To My Heart.

Finally, here's Postcard from Paris.

I hope you like what you've heard so far.  The Band Perry's debut album drops October 12, which is right around the corner!  I think I'll be purchasing a copy and if you like them, I hope you do the same!  Also, be sure to check out their website to learn more about these up-and-coming superstars!

Chick's Pick: New Music For My Peeps!

As you already know, I have totally random tastes in music, but music is what I respond to most. So, one of my favorite types of posts are ones where I can "introduce" my Peeps to music that is speaking to me and that I find to be catchy. The way I figure it, I get to listen to good stuff, you get to listen to good stuff, and who knows...you might just find your favorite new artist.

Before I share with you a few tunes that have my toes tappin', I'd like to share that I never ever mean to infringe on any type of copyright/ownership situations that are already in place. The reason why I share music on my blog is simply to amp up awareness of the artist and the song, and also to share my love of the music with more people. There's never any negative "pulling a fast one" intentions to my music sharing; it's just that - music sharing. The more people who know about an artist, the more people who will hopefully love them and support them in their careers. So, just to be as transparently clear as I can: I own the rights to absolutely nothing I'm about to show you, apart from my words. All credits go to the artists/songwriters/production and record companies, etc.

Okay, now that I've gotten the "official" jargon out of the way, I can share with you some Chick's Picks that are slowly making their way into my playlist!

First up is a fellow named Jason Derulo, and he has a song that is catchy as can be, even though the topic isn't the best. Basically, it's about a cheater trying to get back with the one he cheated on. How you can take a topic such as that and make it likeable enough for me to sing along in my car and happy-clap when it comes on is beyond me. One of the reasons I like this song is because Jason samples Imogen Heap in it. (Basically, she is the female voice on this track, and the song of hers he sampled is entitled Hide and Seek. Hear that song here.) Enjoy this video. If it gets taken down, I apologize....just let me know and I'll try to find another one for you.

Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say

Next up is a totally catchy tune by a band called The Script. I heard it on my Sirius XM Satellite Radio one day as an "Ear-Poppin New Music" selection. (Yes, that is what they call it!) It immediately got stuck in my head, and even though I couldn't remember the words, I was humming it for a good 30-45 minutes after first hearing it. Naturally, I stalked the three or four words I could remember and found it! :) Now, it's here for your listening enjoyment.

The Script - Break Even (with lyrics)

Okay, another one that is so quirky and weird but so catchy and cute is "Fireflies" by Owl City. At first you think, "Seriously. Chicken Wing actually wants me to listen to this?" Then you think, "Seriously. Chicken Wing actually likes this song?" Then, you give it a second chance and you think, "Seriously. This song is kind-of awesome." It pretty much builds from there. Quirky, Weird, Catchy, Cute. Pretty much that order. Enjoy!

So, what do you think? Any new faves come from this list? Hopefully, my Peeps don't think I struck out on these, and look forward to more ear-opening posts like this one! If you have any cool music selections for me, comment me and let me know! I will give ANYTHING a listen once!

Relationship Stress? Give this song a listen!

Every now and again, Mr. Chicken Wing and I will banter back and forth and occasionally, that banter gets downright annoying!

Sometimes, it's all fun and games, and sometimes it's just mundane.

But, I think one of the best lessons that I've begun to learn in this 5+ year relationship we've been on is that sometimes you just have to let go and quit worrying every time you start to pick on each other.

Instead of going the "woe is me" route and thinking that our relationship is falling apart because we "just can't get along" or because "he's picking on me" (which I might have been known to do once or twice...), sometimes just accept it and move on.

I know that Mr. Chicken Wing is a great guy, and he knows that I'm a great gal. Sometimes, we just have off days.

The reason for this post is that when you're pushing each other in the physical fitness department, sometimes you're going to bicker. (Yes, that's right...we're kicking each others' butts. The beach trip is coming soon, and we're trying to save the other beach-goers' eyesights!)

Usually, that bickering then leads to who didn't put their dishes in the sink, or who hasn't unloaded the dishwasher today. I know, it's wayyyyyy less glamourous than some would dilusion themselves to believe! But, after 5 years, I think we're still on the right track - towards domestic bliss! HAHA!

Either way, I came across this song by an artist that I absolutely adore, Ingrid Michaelson. You might remember her BIG moment, when her song "Keep Breathing" debuted on Grey's Anatomy.

This song, called "Giving Up," is lyrical greatness, and completely speaks to me.

Turn those speakers up and give it a listen! (And support her, because she is fabulous!)

*Again, anything I post on here (videos, links, etc.) have copyright and creative rights belonging to someone other than me. I do not claim to own any of this!

Until next time,
The humming/smiling Chicken Wing
